About the Author

Picture
I grew up in a little town called Paris, Ontario, Canada. And no, we don't have an Eiffel Tower, although that would be pretty cool!
My main line of work is retail, selling Ultra-Premium olive oil and balsamic, so writing is my hobby and what I enjoy doing on the side.
I'm currently married to my lovely wife and we have a pet bearded dragon named Ziggy. And yes, she has quite the beard!
When it comes to stories (books or movies), like most teenagers and young adults, I love anything sci-fi and action/ adventure. Being a storyteller at a very young age, a love of writing inevitably came to the fore. In grade 8 (2002), I wrote and completed my first novel, "The Ultimate Agent."

Favorite Authors:
Michael Crichton - Jurassic Park; Prey; State of Fear
Jeffrey Archer - Paths of Glory
Other Hobbies:
Guitar, singing, hockey, movie watching and referencing (I'm pretty good at that, I scare myself sometimes), and being a nerd.

FAQ's

  • How did you get the idea for “The Ultimate Agent”?
When I was 14, I was up late randomly spit-balling ideas with a friend. We both liked superheroes, then thought “Hey, what if a superhero was a spy? Or the other way around?” While pulling out my laptop, I said to myself, “This needs to be the ultimate superhero novel…” and ‘The Ultimate Agent’ was created.

  • What is “The Ultimate Agent” about?
It’s about a civilian who becomes part of an espionage group called the “Ultimate Agency” or UA for short. Through genetics they’re able to ‘give’ people super powers or abilities. Their reason for doing so, a Russian spy organization is able to do the same thing. It’s almost like an ‘arms race’ for super powers.
But there are questions when it comes to super powers. Should everyone rely on super powers to take down the threat? How many super powers can the human body handle? How far can you go with genetics?

  • How long did it take you to write the first book? 2nd? 3rd?
Between school and other responsibilities, it took a year to write the first novel, with a couple of minor changes afterwards. UA2 took another year to create, and was a lot of fun to write and add new characters. UA3 took the longest to write. I started it, then was afflicted by the annoying writers block. A year went by, getting wrapped up in other things. Finally, I had a lightbulb moment and knew exactly how to continue the novel. After another few months, the trilogy was finally finished!

  • Why did you want to write the series?
Being a huge fan of Marvel comics, and anything that had to do with superheroes and spies, the thought of adding to the genres and telling my own story was exciting to undertake, while hopefully putting a new spin to the genres.

  • Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
When I was little, my mom bought me a tape recorder. It got worn out by the number of stories I would tell into it. Listening to Robert Munsch stories kindled my love of being a storyteller. Then I tried to write my own movie sequels just for fun, and did some original work to try and improve my writing.

  • How long did it take you to get published?
Getting published was the hardest road to take. Some publishing companies gave great criticism, and one that I was really hoping to publish with went under. It was almost heartbreaking. But I picked myself back up, and carried on.
Still a student at the time, I didn’t have the money to sign with bigger companies. It got to the point where I never thought it was going to happen. So my novels stayed on my computer for a few years. Then self-publishing became big. Finding a great and easy online company, I was finally able to put my novels on paper!

  • Are you related to Jason Bourne?
HA! I wish… People misspell my last name enough that I could be. My nickname in high school was "The Borne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum"... take your pick, I got all of them.

  • Do you base your characters off of friends or people you know?
‘Who isn’t in my novels?’ is the real question. When writing about a spy organization with a plethora of agents, there are quite a few cameos of friends with slight changes to the names. The two main characters of Devon Bertrand and Brett Bourne are even based off of a close friend growing up and myself, with some minor changes to the names of course.

  • Does your book have a trailer?
One will be coming in the near future... hopefully

  • If your book was a movie, who would you want to portray your characters?
Funny you should ask, my “Dream Cast” is on my Pinterest profile here.

  • Would you want the series to become movies?
Superhero movies are taking the world by storm right now. Will UA ever get a shot at the big screen? It’s a longshot. Would I want it to be a movie series? I can only dream…

  • What will you write next? Are you writing anything now?
It’s hard to end something when you become attached to characters. As much as they’re not real, they become part of your extended family (At least you don’t have to get them gifts at the next get-together). UA3 has a little something extra, giving the option of continuing the series.
And I may just be working on another project… that may or may not take place in the same series…

  • What message do you hope your books will send to readers?
Everyone loves a good, clean read that everyone can enjoy right? One of my earlier blogs explains things further here

  • How can I contact you?
I’ve got this little thing down below, so send me your questions, or tell me your pet’s name and what tricks it can do. I’m good either way, and hope to hear from you!
